Do any fellow partners feel trapped in their current firm? You want to leave but the pressure of finding a new partner role with similar comp is daunting, building a new book and internal relationships, having a magnifying glass on you for those expecting you to make miracles since you came in as a Partner, non competes, etc. force you to stay in your current firm even though you're the unhappiest you've ever been?

Yes every single day - you are not alone. And yes, known devil seems better than the unknown. However I have started sending feelers to explore - ideal job would be outside of consulting because it would be the same crap everywhere… until then its another beautiful day in paradise

I have a slightly different but related problem. Got laid off a couple of months ago. Since this was my third consulting firm in 30 years, I have no doubt I will land somewhere else and deliver results immediately, been there done that, and am talking to 4 other firms right now. I don't feel trapped by a firm, I feel trapped by the consulting industry itself. I'd love to do something else but not sure what else I'd be good at and be able to make anywhere near this kind of money.

McK 1, as a fellow partner of yours I find this assumption a bit arrogant and reductive… and unhelpful (just to have a third point as required).

Based on conversations I’m having with colleagues, yes, fellow partners feel this way. There is a reason they are called Golden Handcuffs.

lol I’m trapped in my industry job for the same reason :)

Not an easy message to hear but sounds like the lifestyle you’re living is based on a partner Rem…if happiness is what you’re after you might want to have a hard look at what you need to earn to be happy vs what you currently have. Having a bit of this myself as I’m looking at what next for my career…you will never be younger than you are today, there’s more to life than a job you hate!

I have been searching for some time. Former big four partner with 25 years of experience. Took a buyout to search for new opportunities. In my experience any of the firms below the Big4 are indeed paying quite a bit less than what we are making at the major strategy firms or the Big4. A&M is one exception. In fact, their salaries are impressive. However, it’s an extremely competitive environment and after a highly paid trial period of 18 months or two years they cut you loose and you’re on your own so that you only keep a percentage of what you sell. They have had significant growth….so it is obviously working for some.

I would also say that many senior corporate roles are just as demanding. We all know this. The right option is out there. I agree with the commentary above that you need to decide if you want to be unhappy with a strong paycheck or search for something that is a good balance.

My wife moved to another big 4 as an existing partner direct admit. Key is having a brand and some pull from the other company. Easier if you are reached out to vs pursuing it yourself.

How about a move into industry? Comp may not be as high but hopefully it will make up for it in other ways (better WLB, less pressure, etc)

Recognize that those who hire you have made a big investment/commitment to do so. You need to make your success their problem as well. I came in as a DAP practice lead on top of several other home grown partners not happy I was there and all immediately bailed out. In retrospect, I got lucky as hell making numbers the first year. But if I had understood the risks, I’m not sure I would have done it.

I was surprised that the two head hunters I recently spoke with provided comp numbers well below where I am. I need to figure out how to make things work as is. 🙂

^this. IMO, most Career consultants who are good at what they do also know what they’re worth. I see a lot of headhunters pitching “partner” titles to make up for the lack of equity/ financial upside at firms that are not on par. I guess they feel that they have some kind of leverage . Not sure why!

Hey! Any Google folks know if it’s possible to negotiate fully remote if a contract role is hybrid? Personally, I don’t want to relocate and go to the office on a contract role given the current economy. Plus, I’m assuming contractors are the first to go in layoffs. I just think it’s a fair trade off if I’d be allowed to work fully remote. I’m also trying to have flexibility to manage my Airbnb business in a different country. Same time zone as the home office if I’d travel weeks at a time.

Intl Tax folks, how long did it take before you were confident in your role? I've worked for the past 3 years in a practice that is heavily consulting based (inbound and outbound structuring) and I feel like I'm only just starting to understand the foundational concepts (where I can explain them clearly to clients) and offering a shred of value. Then I'll have calls where partners discuss complex tax, legal, treasury and other related concepts that all go over my head.. it becomes overwhelming
