Do you ever get used to the panic spikes? I’ve been lawyering for over 6 years now and still have moments of panic multiple times a week. (Yes, I’m in therapy and yes, I’m on anti-anxiety medication but I am wondering if this is a just me experience or if other attorneys feel the panic too.)

No (crying on the inside). 12yoe. I think it’s a personality flaw for some of us. I was even in house and found I had just the same level of panic whenever I’d get a request, even after 5 years and with a relatively laid back environment. My husband on the other hand, can compartmentalize like it’s nobody’s business and never outwardly express any panic that I can see.

In house may help, depending on the environment. Like A1 said, could just be a personality flaw some of us have. I was like that before I left firm life, and in house has been a MUCH different experience for me.

What is causing your panic? Mine comes when I feel like I won’t be able to deliver quality work product in the expected timeframe. That’s the underlying cause for me and my ADHD time blindness means I’ll probably always have that to a degree because properly scoping tasks is super hard (yes I know it’s a key part of the job). Curious if others are panicking for similar or different reasons

Yes. And also on meds for GAD and depression since I was 14. And in my experience, I feel it is a double edged sword. Helps in some ways and stinks in others. Now I am 50+. It has “seasons” where it is better or worse in life but is a constant companion. Do not let it run you out of law if this is what you want to do! And yes, there are many out there like us. They hide it because others feel it is a character flaw or makes you not suited to the profession. Hogwash. You got this.

Not sure what meds you take but if you’ve never tried Buspirone, it may be worth an inquiry to your doctor or psychiatrist. It did wonders for my panic attacks.

The only side effect I had was that I’d be a little dizzy for maybe an hour after taking it, that went away in a few weeks and I would just take it early in the morning when I first got up.

Maybe talk to your doctor about upping the dose?

No, never

No, but I’ve definitely learned not to take my client’s problems to heart, which helps reduce the panic down to just the items in my realm of control. That’s still a large realm, so mild panic at most points.
