With inflation where it’s at, the honest answer is no.
I’d find a related (volunteer) interest outside of work that gave me inspiration.
I think it just depends. Can you actually afford to do that? Would you be trading a stable job in this environment for a “maybe” better? These are things you can ask yourself. If you’re certain you could afford it and about it’s job security, then I don’t see anything wrong with that.
Do you feel confident that the new opportunity is recession proof? If not you may be walking into the same kind of economic environment AND be last in (first out in a layoff).
My simple answer as someone who has been in an over demanding and stressful job, yes.
I choose peace of mind and sanity over money any day. Use that extra time to build a second stream of income, freelancing or consulting, OR just take it easy and pick up a new hobby. Do those things you never had time for. You've worked for years and maybe this is the break you needed.
No, not in the current economic and labor environment.
100%
Depends on where you are in your career and life and what your priorities are. If I was early in my career, no. I would work the long hours, get the tough, good experience and hustle. Now, with a base of experience and more responsibilities at home, I’d be more likely to consider a cut back.
Thanks much. I have the hours and hustle logged - so definitely a consideration. It’s also maybe a step in a new direction. Appreciate your comment. Thx!
Depends on the specifics of hours/pay. I wouldn’t with my current circumstances, because my job is not that stressful, pays well and has good work-life balance. I’d keep looking for a way to have it all instead of taking a significant pay cut, esp because I have a family to support.
A pharma agency, and sadly my experience is not universal even within the agency - so much depends on each individual client. But if you can find a nice client and nice, supportive colleagues, then I’ve found it’s not terribly stressful even if it gets busy.
2 questions:
1) how much less is “a lot less?”
2) how does the agency prove fewer hours?
I suspect the second question is harder to answer. While half the hours can be delivered in the short term, I sincerely doubt that it will be honored long term without you being accused of “not being a team player.”
This!
Yes but with the caveat/advice to be careful what you wish for. I've made somewhat of the reverse move. I worked just as hard doing work that inspired me, albeit more at my own pace than clients hounding me. Also do not underestimate the stress of not having sufficient financial resources, especially if a health issue arises. So yes I would. But I'd do the math carefully and ask hard questions to ensure the quality of life improvement is really what's promised to make the jump worth it. Good luck.
Honestly no. COL is only going up and as long as I have good WLB rn I can’t complain. If I did I’d just start a side hustle to make up the extra income and those typically are demanding in their own way.
I already make half of what I should be making..
On a more serious note, I think it’s all about where you at your career. At some points, you need to focus on financial wellness and so you may need to take a more stressful role (like when you need to make some $$ for a major purchase/investment/family planning), and not when you’re juggling other personal priorities.
Would like to, but it’s not possible at my current salary. With rent prices today, I’d be living paycheck to paycheck.
Depends at which stage of my career. If I’m still young and trying to advance into my career I will prefer to get more opportunities to learn and develop and don’t mind longer hours.
