Yes. Be careful in picking an attorney for this though - most are not experienced with these types of claims and some may be charging you when a lot of free resources exist for this. Go through a veteran organization (e.g., VFW) or a state supported veteran assistance commission office (if available in your state). These non-lawyers have experience filing for and appealing disability ratings. They can also refer you to local, qualified attorneys to assist, if that becomes necessary. Also, many law schools have veteran assistance clinics that can provide no-cost legal service, too.
After leaving the military, I volunteered at a veteran’s assistance commission during undergrad and I’ve assisted veterans on a pro bono basis through different groups and clinics while working as an attorney at a large law firm. Please don’t just hire any attorney someone recommends - be sure to exhaust your free resources and the traditional claims process first.
