Do you make yourself available during off hours or while on vacation? Why? Is it more difficult to unplug once you get to a certain level? I'm sure some of it comes down to personality type, too.

I'm always supposed to be reachable, though it usually seems superfluous. I think it has become almost a status symbol that people want to show they're always needed at their job. I'm usually within reach (unless I hike out of cell coverage or something), just in case there's some emergency. And I'm fine if I don't hear from anyone, my personality doesn't need that level of being plugged in every minute.

I am available for a huge chunk of the day, but do have off hours where I just have to be unavailable. If there is something already going on, then I can be reached, but if it is something out of the blue, not really necessary, I try to just leave that. It can be a very slippery slope!

I got negative feedback in my written mid year review for "not being reachable during my pto". Direct quote. A client emailed me Saturday night and I didn't respond until Sunday night. Once.

Brutal.

I make myself available for sure. It’s a cutthroat business. Also, this is US, not Europe lol

I'm like 90% sure there are people from the UK in here, but I get your point.

I'll be honest I am really bad about unplugging. I realize that I deserve my time off too and nothing is really THAT big of an emergency, but I still struggle with being completely unavailable. Its something I am really trying to be better about it because my husband hates when we are on vacation and I am doing work related stuff.

So I used to work for a company where my job was good, was a director of business solutions for a fashion brand. Only issue was that the CFO micromanaged and ended up leaving. My background is digital transformation however I took an infrastructure position to rebuild a provincial healthcare system. So I have a felony. I interviewed with a recruiter today who was super cheerful and nice. Once I disclosed my felony, which she already knew about since a friend referred me to her, she immediately stopped the interview and said she couldn’t in good faith move forward on my application given the nature of my offense. I explained that I had done my time, paid my fines and restitution and had the experience to become a great asset to the organization. -she suggested I look into bartending.

Asking for wife who's also in banking. If she got ~$100k in signing bonus in 2019 for 1 year commitment in CA and started FT in July 2020, assuming she leaves before July 2021, can her employer claw back full amount in California? Some say it's much tougher to do so under CA law but wonder if anyone has any insights. Banks won't likely care about analyst signing bonuses, but associate bonus at EB with diversity bonus can be significant. If she quits before, she won't be going to another bank.
