Is breaking into equity research/coverage teams as hard as breaking into traditional advisory/M&A IB being from a non target school with a non finance degree?

Coverage groups are pure-play IB too, similar to a product group like M&A whereas Equity Research is it’s own separate domain. So your chances of getting into coverage groups are the same as getting into an M&A product group. There might be a minor difference because M&A is more sought after, but it’s splitting hairs.

I’d say m&a is the most competitive group. You’d likely have better luck with a coverage group or an ER role. Regardless, I’d do some research and find some alumni from your school who work in any of these roles because the hardest part is actually getting the chance to interview so getting them to refer or support you is massive

Thanks, I appreciate your insight!
