It doesn't sound like your managers are people you would normally confide in, so I think it would be best to keep quiet about your plans to move on. Just proceed on a need to know basis, if they have no need to know, don't tell them. If you are angling for another job internally, they would find out, so it would be best to tell them yourself in that case. But if you're looking out in the great wide world, it's none of their business until you have an offer and need to tell them.
I would say do not tell your manager or higher- ups until you have secured a new job. In most companies, a two-week notice is all that's required. If you do use anyone as a reference from your current job, then I would probably tell them earlier than 2 weeks.
