If they do they’re not the right boss to work for. I’ve both been told by a former director that they expected to work for me one day and told many of my own direct reports I expect to work for them one day. If your goal isn’t developing amazing talent you shouldn’t be managing people. Side note, within the past week I tried to hire that former boss as a freelancer (she wasn’t avail)!
Having interviewed lots of people over the years, one of the biggest challenges for some seniors is thinking they’re above certain tasks. None of us are above paying invoices or processing reuse. If your “friend” is having trouble I’d reach out to former directors and ask for feedback on how to improve.
I don't think so. The relationship with their head of production is more predictive of job success than anyone else on the team. We are all about reducing risk and people with more experience usually do that - that's a reason to hire them!
