Do you tip when you pick up takeout? I usually don’t, like, I’m literally just running in to grab the bag, but lately it feels like everyone expects it. I picked up lunch the other day and got the side‑eye, and now I’m wondering… am I being cheap, or was I just living under an old tipping rulebook?

No. I don’t. I tip if someone has to physically bring me a drink and make it all look nice. But if I’m picking up, they are not doing any of that. So, no.

That makes sense! I feel the same way. Glad that I am not alone!

I do, but only 10-15%, whereas dining in, I’m more likely to do 20-25%. I don’t like system anymore than anyone else but the fact is it’s tough out there, it’s hard to make a livable wage doing that kind of work. I appreciate the care taken with my orders and know the control the people behind the counter have with my food. So yeah.

Wow, that’s quite generous! I guess I’ve just been sticking to the old rule of 15% for lunch and 20% for dinner when dining in.

I do, just a lesser amount than if I was actually sitting down to eat in a restaurant. It feels a little silly to leave tip for someone literally just handing me a bag, but I worked in restaurants throughout college and have a lot of sympathy for those employees. They're all underpaid and the tips do help.

I usually don’t tip on takeout since I think of it differently from dining in, but I totally get where you’re coming from, especially knowing how tough restaurant jobs can be.

Absolutely not for pick up orders

Not normally, and this has me thinking more about it now. If there is a tip jar and I have some cash on me, I’ll throw some in that. I’m not picking up takeout a lot either, so not sure what the expectations are.

I don’t order takeout often either, but the side-eye I got really made me wonder if that’s becoming the new norm...

Nope - the lovely thing about living in England is not having to tip very often, even in restaurants. If the service genuinely is amazing then I’ll give a tip, but never more than £5.

I hear you! It’s nice when tipping isn’t expected all the time. A little something for great service feels fair without going overboard.

I don’t usually tip on takeout, but if I’m going to sit down in the restaurant I’ll do 5-10% tip (for places with no waiters of course, more like 20-25% if my table is being served by a person).

I always tip in cash, usually about 15% but sometimes I just straight up give them $10-$20. I’m probably biased though because my immigrant parents earned their college tuition making deliveries.

That’s really thoughtful and I love that it’s rooted in your family’s story. It’s a nice way of honoring what your parents went through!
