Does anyone actually have a balanced life? My WLB is currently just me crying in the Starbucks drive-thru. I had five minutes between a deposition and a client call, and that was the only me time I’ve had in four days. We use these corporate buzzwords to make the grind sound manageable, but the reality is just a series of micro-breakdowns fueled by caffeine and spite.

That's now how it's supposed to be. It's supposed to be hard. It aint easy. But if that's you--- you got make changes. Money doesn't pay for what you're describing.

Changes could be boundaries, could be mental strategies, could be workload, could be lateraling... but get out that funk.

It'll never be easy to be a "successful" lawyer, but if it's ruining your life then get outta there.

Yes. I am in house counsel and have a cushy high paying 9-5 job (if that, some days). Make about $300k and don’t do anything outside of business hours for the most part. I’m leaving the office at 2 today if I can get my work done as planned. Gonna spend the rest of the day with my kids and not think about work.

I’ve made some serious issues. I work way more hours/week than when I was at a firm and I’m not making that kind of money to make it worth it

Appeals. 40 a week almost every week. And no one bothers you, ever.

I’m at my happiest when I’m writing all day, so I’ll definitely look into it. Thanks!

Balanced in that it is very heavy on the work and very heavy on the family, I guess? I WFH and have 4 kids 9 and under. Being remote, and having a 1700 billing req make work not unbearable, but it’s a very busy life

How many hours are you billing? I’m always around 2,100 billables with a young kid and WLB is just fine

uplifting

I’m in BigLaw and I have sprints for sure, but lulls in between where I meet friends for lunch, hit the gym mid-day, stop working when my kids get home from school, etc. So, yes. I do feel like I have a pretty good balance.

I’m also PT and my hours target is 1,500 and I don’t bill much more than that.

I have a partner that calls me multiple times a day to talk about updates on our cases. Sometimes just to ask “anything to update me on?” He’s known across all of the associates for doing this. Most of the calls repeat information I’ve already provided in emails to him or the client. I normally bill this time as “strategize on” or “consider XYZ in further of” and it keeps getting appealed. Any advice?
