I was fired from my firm I was at for 4 years. Unemployed for 4 months. I applied to over 100 places until I landed a much better role than the previous firm.
what did u do?
My toddler has been struggling with potty training for weeks. Every time I am in charge of it it seems she ended up having an accident on the floor (multiple times a day some days). Today she peed in her own potty and I could not have felt more proud! And she was so happy that we were pumping her up - it made my week.
I job searched for a year then got the job of my dreams. Just keep at it. It’s brutal. Do one thing that brings you joy.
I have (over)loaded my plate with enough cases representing the “good guys”, that I can reasonably turn down cases that give me the ick without fear of repercussions. For me, this is a big deal as a big law associate.
I was put on a “special review” at my prior firm where I was for over 5 years and loved - I felt blindsided and devastated. I tried to overcome it but clearly they were pushing me out. After a brutal interviewing process (made my ulcer come back), I ended up going to an objectively better firm where they are so kind and treat me better and really value me and my work - best career move I ever made. Hang in there - you’ll find your way.
Sending good vibes. Many lawyers have faced a bad economy and job market and made it though, and you will too! Take a break and do something you enjoy!
You haven’t even conceived of how fulfilled you’ll be in your next role. You got this!
I just won a really big case, which was exciting for both me and the firm. I hear you, though—I have several friends who are looking for new roles, and the job market is tough out there. Hang in there; I truly believe something will come your way.
I just got word I’m being put up for shareholder one year early. I’ve worked my butt off for years but never remotely thought that I could get put up for shareholder a year in advance
Positive thoughts: In our perfectionistic, competitive, status-obsessed profession, it can be easy to lose track of your accomplishments. Finishing school, excelling in college, completing law school, passing the bar, getting a job…these are not small things. Just because others do them doesn’t mean there wasn’t a lot of hard work, persistence, overcoming obstacles and excellence. These are major accomplishments. And achieving the accomplishment isn’t the point. The point is that you persist, you strive, you are resilient and adaptable. You grow and evolve. You are incredibly capable. So at this moment, when things feel so hard, take a step back and see the capabilities you have, the grit, the drive. Walk yourself through some moments in your past when things were really hard. YOU got yourself through them. These capabilities, these experiences are proof that you will come to the other side of this moment, leave it too in that rearview, that you have “the stuff” to do this. YOU will get yourself through this moment too. I have no doubt — zero.
Sending you all the good vibes. I was let go from my firm after the longtime client I worked with left and while I was talking to others in the firm about different opportunities. It took me a long time to find a new role. I have learned so much since then, about myself, people, my kids. Things aren’t perfect but they are so much better. The old firm is was so unhealthy for me and I had to be away from it for a while to see it.
Relatable
Yes, I worked hard all year, made hours and despite that, a partner i work for found a way to convince one of my reviewers to say a few untrue negative things resulting in my losing 50k of the 100k bonus I earned. Oh… wait you said positive…? The positive is that you’re not me.
