We are still teaching entire works as a unit -- novel, play, poetry. Teaching excerpts or "abbreviated forms" of the works sounds good, but it might miss some of the more subtle points that make a novel more than just a collection of words.
Teaching excerpts is the epitome of teaching to a test. There’s no way to teach the complexities of development with an excerpt. We are using a short anchor text and student choice texts for genre analysis. The kids are reading more than ever before and loving the choice.
