It means I have less autonomy and authority to make decisions than some Senior Directors. I cannot sign any technology contracts or purchase agreements. I cannot reorganize my teams without COO blessing after the COO reviews with the CEO.
I am excluded from all business and strategy discussions while Sr Directors have a voice. For example they are all currently in a future-state strategic planning retreat to which I am not invited.
Despite having a “C” title, my role is treated more as a glorified order taker to “make technology stuff happen” than a peer to the other executives in the C-suite…and at times Junior to Senior Directors.
That makes no sense at all!!! Someone like the CHRO needs to change that up
Does it matter? Does that make the work less interesting? Not sure I understand why you care
This reads as judgy and flippant, which is not how I meant it. Genuinely trying to understand the concern.
I’d think you saw the org chart before joining? Thus you made an informed decision, so why all this frustration now? Seems you think you are overqualified for this job, so move on and start looking. I worked with hundreds of companies in my consulting role and often technology person reports to COO along with legal, HR, etc. depending on how strategic each function is for the organization. It’s commonly accepted thatCEO can not have more than 5-6 direct reports. However, if you believe for your company your function is strategic (simple example would be technology, fintech or telco company) - then it’s time for them to move your role up. Can you make a business case for it? Just saying AI is the future and they should elevate your role is not going to make it.
Yeah not gonna tackle it. The CEO is a micromanager and she likes having a lot of direct reports according to my sources.
But indeed inefficient- lol, she won’t use Docusign and insists on real ink signatures on everything.
When she was out of the office the past two weeks, none of my agreements/contracts were signed and vendors were beating down my door.
As for the board, she meets with them alone. Others (COO, CFO) only permitted to attend certain subcommittees when invited for a specific discussion.
Zero IT report/status delivered to the board which I thought was a requirement due to cybersecurity risks.
Shrugs. Oh well.
