I'm pretty sure you will need proof that she's an emotional support animal to be able to bring her on the airplane with you. I don't think they generally accommodate pets on airplanes unless you have something like that. I totally get not wanting to use the cargo, and I probably would buy an extra seat just for everyone's comfort. But you'll def need an emotional support proof too
That’s the problem…the fitting under the seat issue (read my post).
Whole lot of false info being thrown out here, though I am sure well-intended.
What it boils down to, and applying to all US airlines is the following:
- There are no special policies or permissions for ESAs. An ESA is considered and treated the exact same way as a non-support/service companion animal (dog or cat). In short, the animal must fit within a carrier that meets the airline’s stated requirements (can fit underneath yours or in front of seat ahead) and the animal must remain contained within the carrier at all times for the duration of the flight. No special paperwork required, remarkably 🙄. Fee required and is the same for companion and ESAs.
- Most US airlines no longer fly pets in cargo, for obvious and good reason. Please don’t ever do this.
- You cannot purchase a seat for an animal of any kind. This won’t get you anything except an empty seat where you can dump some of your crap lol.
- Service animals that have met the stated requirements and been formally approved by the airline are not required to be enclosed in any form of carrier or meet general sizing standards. They must still of course adhere to established travel safety protocol and regulations. Only dogs are recognized as service animals. There are no fees for service animal travel.
I own a plane. People will sometimes find single-pilot options in smaller aircrafts or smaller private jets that are dog friendly. There are some companies out there other than commercial airlines that I would suggest you look into. Also, try Pilots N Paws and other similar avenues. If you want to PM me, depending on your trip departure and arrival I may be able to charter you and the dog or just the dog.
I have flown with my dog many times, but she's only 15 pounds. Delta charges you $125 each way to travel with a pet. United I think was similar, but that's been a few years. You could buy a ticket for a pet to be in a seat, but that would be the same price as a human.
Exact same situation I’m in. 25 pounder with long legs so she doesn’t meet under seat requirements. Curious if there are any idea here.

There are very few airlines and routes that will let them fly on a seat (Alaska in the US is the only one). Emotional support animals are not allowed on planes anymore (changed under Trump 1). The exception to this are service dogs who have been formally trained to assist… you provide the paperwork to the airline a week or so in advance.
Explore semi-private charters like Aero or Flex. Not nearly as bad as a full charter but still 1k~ per

For most airlines, an animal must fit in a carrier under the seat of the plane, or they have to be a service animal. Emotional support isn’t enough to get them in the cabin. The laws changed after COVID. Otherwise they have to go in cargo. A lot of airlines don’t have the cargo option anymore. Alaska Airlines has a great reputation for good cargo animal handling if they’re available to you.
We used to take our dog with us often. Weight limit was 14lbs to be on plane, under seat. Larger needed to fly cargo. Buying a seat for your dog is not an option.

I’ve seen people fly with pitbulls, golden retrievers, and labradors between their legs on domestic and international flights lately. They’re clearly not service dogs because they aren’t well-trained. Check Reddit for American Airlines and United to see what I mean. You could fly with whatever size dog you want, but you need to check the airline for their policy on dogs in the cabin.

All of this information is publicly available and easily accessible. That said- Yes, for sure, it can all get confusing and frustrating, and, with a cherished animal’s well-being at heart, of course additionally anxiety-inducing.
Do your homework. Read. Make a call. Make a second and a third call. Ask your veterinarian. Waltz in to the local animal rescue center. Text Animal Control. Seriously. So many resources. And thennn you ask for the tips and tricks from your community. Meaning comfortable traveling experiences for both person and doggo.
I know just how simultaneously overwhelming and silly it sounds. Really.
Get your information verified straight from the horse’s mouth. It’s what you signed up for and what you are obligated to do.

I didn’t doubt that you had. Only felt it’s important to remind just because of how quickly and very recently travel policies have changed, and are still, in regard to pets and all things! Without even realizing it, the most well-seasoned and responsible pet-travelers (def not a term and that I just totally made up lol, but you get it) can find themselves in a potentially major debacle and just be totally thrown for a loop.
Me being one of them “post”-COVID, just trying to get me and doggo home, walking up to the check-in counter with my by then standard pup flight folder (yes, I kept a folder lol), with every single form signed dated and in order, every single thing in its organized place in my doggo plane bag, bub by my side ready to ride. “$250, is that credit?” Umm what..? My ticket was $35, but that’s a whole different time/topic lol.
My point being just to know your stuff and have your ducks squared. But don’t have a duck.
Cuz that air travel anxiety is enough without having a bunch of nonsense thrown into the mix 🐶

So. I have been recommended actually getting my dog registered as a support animal. I have also been recommended a few companies that help connect you/get the process done. One is Support Pets (have to look at the others). It’s a 1 year registration for $100. Seems too good to be true?
The “membership” is a creative new one though, hadn’t come across that before. And with an imaginary expiration applied to it to boot! How ballsy can you get. 🫠
