As a close friend of a fallen hero, it 100% feels odd. And same, I shop sales and do the cookouts and such, too, but I still spend the day thinking about our heroes and their sacrifices. I just don't use it as an excuse to get drunk and party like some do.

Totally get that. It can be a mix of emotions - celebrating with friends and family while still holding space to honor those who gave everything. I think it’s about finding that balance and not losing sight of the meaning behind the day.
The holiday has had that odd dual purpose for decades. In the late 1860s it began as Decoration Day, people would walk to cemeteries and decorate the graves of Union soldiers with spring flowers. Over time it changed to honor the dead of all the nation's wars, but it also became a celebration to mark the beginning of summer. It's one of those things that's traditional and you can't change it, but you're right, it does feel weird at times.

Yes, exactly - it’s such a unique blend of remembrance and celebration. I suppose as long as we’re taking a moment to reflect and honor the meaning behind the day, enjoying time with loved ones doesn’t take away from it.
A lot of coworkers were talking about their plans at the end of the week and I was thinking the same thing, it’s actually a really sad day. Also would never judge because I too have definetly enjoyed a BBQ and outing. A good reminder we have a lot of people to thank for the ability to do this.

Yes! It can be both. Enjoying the day is okay, but it’s important to remember why we have the freedom to do so. A little reflection goes a long way in honoring those who sacrificed for us.

Genuinely, growing up I didn’t even know what Memorial Day was celebrating. I just knew I got to hang out with my family friends that day. Now that I’m older and moved out, I would like to be a bit more intentional with my holidays. Haven’t really gotten further than just the desire though. Maybe next year?
