Never gift up
Rising Star
I don’t want gifts from my associates.
Nay. Just wish them a happy birthday.
You gift down not up

I don't know anyone at my office's birthday..
Depends on the Relationship. I had a manager who started at roughly the same time as me but was a more senior lateral. We worked together for years as colleagues and I supported their promotion to be my manager. I'd still get them something small like a cookie from a bakery.
If you don't genuinely classify them as a friend, I wouldn't get them anything. Don't gift up

Wait I’ve been gifted up to- how should I read that?

It’s a book, hopefully should be fine…

Buy them lunch or a drink but not a gift

No gifting up
If they haven't been to your home & you don't hang out with them on weekends, then no gifts. S/he's not your bff. The best gift you can give them is something work-related. Like finish a project early. Or solve a glaring team/business problem that really frustrates your manager. Those gifts are such blessings.

I did - a slice of cake from a nice bakery near the office
