Give it to me straight. If I take 2 years off to be a SAHM, will it be too difficult to pivot to inhouse at that point (last work experience being from big law)?

It will be more difficult than if you go straight from big law or another job. Impossible? No one can say - will depend on your experience and the type of role you're looking for.

In addition to other considerations and what A1 said? I think it will also depend on the market at that time and your practice area.

The challenge is you’re almost certainly not going to want to go back after 2 years. If you have 1 kid, you may be ready for #2. At age 2, kids are at peak separation anxiety. It would be easier to wait until kindergarten at that point.

Yes.

I worked with someone who did this once and she was so distracted all the time that we regretted hiring her. We ultimately had to demote her into an admin role. I don’t think I’m the only one who has been burned by this situation, so you’ll be forced to confront some (perhaps unfair) opinions when you go to return.

From what I hear, it is not an easy adjustment. If you really want to stay in the workforce, even doing a reduced schedule will look better than leaving completely for several years.

I’m strongly thinking about this. Been in big law six years and want to enjoy my time with my one year old but afraid I won’t be able to find a job if I take 2-3 years off.

My family has tried all the permutations, and my favorite is us both working PT. It feels sustainable, and no one is overwhelmed with work or child care.

I worked in big law 5 years, stayed at home 6 years, and then through a connection started working part-time/contract in house. After 5 years of doing that I applied for full time jobs and got one. I’m earning less than if I had stayed in the workforce but I feel lucky I was able to get back in.

Hi all! I was thinking about changing industries. I am currently an underwriter for for-hire transportation with 7.5 YOE. Wondering what others have found to be transferable skills or if anyone has made a career change. Also curious what other career paths other underwriters have gone on (possible changing departments or line of business, etc). Any info or suggestions appreciated!!

Present Package - 19.5L (fixed)

Not sure about variable payout but will have to let go off the joining bonus and hike for sure.

DE&I is now a core leadership competency. If you are managing diverse talent, it’s important to understand what the term “privilege” means within a DE&I context so you can lead your team to higher levels of inclusivity+develop optimal strategies for solutioning around team issues/challenges. Everyone has some aspect of privilege depending upon the context. Privilege means the absence of obstacles/barriers, not necessarily the presence of perks. Though some would say *that* itself is a perk.

For those that are home grown (at least 2 levels) into the PPMD level, how has your relationship with juniors that you’ve been close to from the start evolved? Have you had to pull away from them (intentionally or not) or are you just as close? Is the saying “it’s lonely at the top” rung true for you?
