Going to be turning 30 this summer and have been teaching for five years. I don't feel like a rookie anymore, but I occasionally like to reach out and ask others if they have any advice of what they wish they would have done when they were my age and at my step in my career. So, just putting this out there! Is there anything I should absolutely be doing (or not doing) at my age and experience level?

Be sure you invest in good shoes; older you will thank you. Take your PTO when you’re sick and/or need a mental health day. Summers and holidays are for REST and refreshing yourself. The absolute best thing you can do for yourself and your students is to be well taken care of.

If you can, buy extra years towards your retirement. It is much cheaper now than it will be later when you are close to retirement age. Also, put as much money as you can into a 403b, and/or Roth IRA every month. Your future self will thank you.

I don’t know if you can do this in every state, but in California you can purchase retirement time for any school work you did where retirement pay was not taken out. This would usually be time that you spent as a sub, but other things qualify as well. For example, let’s say you subbed for a year. You can purchase that year and add it to the total number of years you worked when you retire. So, if you worked 30 years, you will now have 31 years. This could be worth around an extra $500 a month when you retire. The problem is, if you wait until you are ready to retire it is very expensive. One year costs about $80-90 thousand to buy. But, if you buy it early in your career, it will cost you a fraction of the price. Unfortunately, nobody tells young teachers this, and it is too late by the time most of us find out.

Also. Happy early Birthday

Thank you 😊

Hey people

I have recently received an offer letter from PwC and have signed and accepted the offer (via Workday portal).
Now when I check the tasks against the job on workday, I can see no tasks pending and under completed tasks: a green tick against 'review and sign offer letter (step complete)' (and I can see the offer)
I am told that I would receive onboarding emails from HR, but I haven't yet.
My DoJ is in the fourth week of July. When do we generally expect these communications?

Does anyone have any insight into partners retiring early? I am at a point where I need to consider leaving if I am not aiming for partner. I don’t see myself working past my 40s. My partner and I are not big spenders and anticipate have enough to retire comfortably in 40s (obviously a lot can change). I have been assured I will become SM in next year (currently 31 years old).

Is negotiating offers the norm now? I’ve been at my company awhile and at the time I was hired they said they don’t do negotiations, take it or leave it and they’d offer the next person. I do believe we renegotiate now, however I’m not sure if it’s the rule, the exception, or somewhere in the middle?

Hello Fishes,
I got an opportunity from NTT Data BPO.
I am currently being hired for nightshift. Are there any chances for getting day shift or mid shift?
Or are there any chances to get a change in shift after getting on boarded?
Will it be okay to discuss this with HR?
Because during interview I said yes to Night Shifts.

Any devs work for a nonprofit and get paid well? I get the impression that those two things are mutually exclusive. Is that so? I think I would absolutely love using my tech skills to do good full time instead of just in my spare time, but I'm afraid that I won't be able to afford the pay cut. For reference, I make about $100k.
