I’d have the first decision point be whether you actually want to be a partner (to do all the work it would take to make partner over the next 5-7 years and then actually be a partner for 5-10 years). The specifics depend on the firm but yes you can certainly retire early (and you would have made more money than if you go to industry now). But again, all depends on whether that’s what you want to do with your remaining 15-20 year career. Also if your firm has a MD path, that could be a viable path too.
I don’t mind what I do, and can see myself doing it another 15 years. More or less concerned about the buyout once you are in. At my firm I think it would be 7-8 years before I made partner
My dad was a partner @ RSM and retired at 56. He continues to not regret that decision, but also follows up with that paycheck and bonus would be awfully nice (for background he is by far the cheapest person I know and him and my mom had enough to retire and live very comfortably at 40)
I can imagine it would be hard to walk away from that kind of money. I at least would like to have the option so I am not sure how leaving works once you’re a partner.
