I only shop the sales. My local stores have rewards and will keep track of what you buy and give coupons.

Rewards and coupons definitely make a difference!
I've always been pretty thrifty by nature, so I'm able to adjust despite all the price gouging. The grocery chain I frequent does a lot of buy one get one free sales, so I stock up during those. I have to store more stuff, but for a lot of staples it's really helpful. And I don't buy much prepared food, so that helps a lot. I notice a lot of people pay a premium to buy meals they only have to heat, and that's just wasteful.
