Looking at the entirety of your firm's interaction with the client, are you leading one of many projects or THE engagement? If it is the latter, show and defend. If it isn't, then ask the client partner what the objectives and budget focus of the client account are - because that would signify that a different engagement has a greater potential for downstream revenue and the client partner is hedging client budgetary limitations and leadership signals for the go-forward.
With that, basically share the feedback from the client with your client partner to quell any misconceptions, and get on the same page for the long term engagement strategy.
A lot of questions:
-What firm?
-Was ‘the client’ the buyer? Are other project sponsors on board with your value and results?
-How is ‘the client’ perceived in their organization? What is their relationship with their bosses and project sponsors?
-What is your relationship with your boss/partner/account team?
-Who sold the work/developed the relationship in the first place?
-What role does this ‘younger person’ play on the account today?
Other than the firm question, I believe your explanation for what happened lies in exploring the answers to the above questions.
May be politics with someone brighter working to usurp you and take your spot. Happens in nature everywhere don’t act surprised, stay sharp and engage when you can win
A couple of clarifying questions:
- is the client representative sending you feedback the same person as the one sending feedback to your boss?
- do you have clarity on “team doesn’t add value” in terms of expectations set ahead of the engagement and measurement of those expectations (beyond client feedback)? These could be OKRs expressed in terms of assignments successfully completed on time, within budget and within acceptable quality metrics, billable volume in resource hours/$$$ value, billable utilization etc.
- did you get any customer feedback surveys done that records satisfaction on critical parameters?
This should be about setting the record straight, even if you get replaced by somebody else. But do it a professional way.
