Had to urgently pull my 3yo son out of his school for safety concerns. We’re touring a new school tomorrow but for this week and potentially a few weeks until we get a solid plan, how do we work a fulltime job with back to back meetings with a very active 3year old at home?!

Based on experience… Care.com or Babysitters.com; look for grandmotherly types, living closest to you, because they typically have the most flexible last-minute daytime schedules compared to other profiles on those sites. You’re going to find 3 or 4 of them, and pay one at a time, on different days, to keep your child entertained and watched an hour before your meeting(s), with the door open so you can listen in and supervise, and then during your meeting, door closed, while you are right there at home.

You will find out who you and your child are most comfortable with, and have those nearby resources, plural, on tap in the future in a pinch.

If your company has backup care like bright horizons’ backup care program, take advantage of the in-home care

Came here to say this. I wouldn’t leave my kid home alone with the BH folks but they’re GREAT if someone can WFH to just make sure your child is entertained and fed. Some are amazing but the bar isn’t the highest.

You might have trouble for the first day or two, but usually they can confirm someone for a few days out and keep you with the same person for many days or weeks at a time

Are you able to hire a day time au pair or baby sitter who can be there at home with you and son? You could then be either WFM or in the office, whatever your setup is. Maybe hybrid approach if it’s a new person.

Give your kids, their grandparents.
They give emotional security, love, affection and roots to kids at a time when they need them the most.

But also for OP’s original question - do you have the backup care benefit through work? It’s not great but works in a pinch until you find a better solution

Unfortunately no care perks due to exiting to industry in September :( I haven’t yet been able to find a babysitter that would work so just need to have an interim plan. Leadership knows but I still have a very intense workload right now because we’re coming off all the startups in the next 2 weeks.

I would find a new babysitter stat. I had a few unexpected days with my hubs out of town on paternity leave and I found on through care.com in 24 hours.

Give yourself grace during this period and let them have all the screen time you need to get through. It’s temporary.

like

100% use the back up care. This inclides in home babysitter. Additionally, is there any way you can work with your project leadership and adjust your schedule during the transition? I believe leadership are more supportive and understanding these days.

like

Agree, especially if this is temporary while you find a new care arrangement, when the original one fell through because of safety issues.

Backup care saved me when I was in a similar problem with my 3yo. It ended up being how we found the perfect childcare facility for her.

What were the safety concerns? Anything we can all learn from to look out for?

Just to add, because I skipped this part - at the point that I told the mom about the teacher targeting her son, 2 other parents had shared concerns about her aggressively reacting to him as well which is why I told the mom what I saw at that point as a pattern. The school told the mom that the boy was refusing to come to class because the previous teacher was ‘coddling him’. However, he had been going to the school since he was a few months old and always loved going to school until this day.

Set of stations by the hour or less. Block center, outside time, snack time, coloring time, play dough time, nap time, lunch time, etc. make it structured just like daycare. I did it once for a week and it’s very possible! You got this!

Hi everyone. I’m a front end software engineer. I’m interviewing next week for a solutions engineer at a company I really like, which I mistakenly applied for as I saw they needed ReactJS, JavaScript, HTML/CSS. Upon reading the job description, it’s clear I will be doing a lot of sales and client consulting over actually coding. I know they have a FE SWE role open. How would you approach asking the recruiter if there are any SWE openings I could be considered for instead ?
