🙌 I feel you!
This year’s been eye-opening how unstable advertising and marketing is. I don’t really see a longevity here; pay doesn’t match hours/constant hustle. I’m pivoting out (I haven’t entirely landed on the niche, but looking at different opportunities and already resigned).
The visa part is hard, especially if you’re tied down to an employer. I’m really sorry you have to deal with this.
If you’re still employed, I’d connect with a coach and start setting goals on where you want to be. And then backtrack on how to get there. Start connecting with people in these companies or industires, etc. Advertising is not the be-all and end-all; but we don’t know what we don’t know - need to look for more information on what’s outthere.
Congrats on the green card!👏
I don’t recommend a career coach, but more of a therapists/coach, they are there only to guide you for you to figure out it yourself. Through my previous employer I had access to Springhealth, and there were several decent ones. If it’s a major life decision, it’s worth it.
I was brand-side as well, and for me it didn’t really work, but depends a lot on the team, the company, the industry, all so different. Start chatting with people who are at your target companies.
Re strategy, if you’re to make a pivot, I’d pivot to something more lucrative/in-demand. When I pivoted to strategy I discarded myself from pursuing more lucrative careers because of self-doubt; and while I don’t regret my path, also it’s a field with a lot of supply and not enough demand; plus, constant hustle for a basic pay.
But all depends on what are your goals, life situation, etc.
I am right there with you (less the visa situation). I have had similar experiences myself throughout my career. Laid off three times in my career and experienced traumatizing sexual harassment and just general harassment by bosses in the workplace. I don’t have that experience now but I do find myself in a place where I don’t have any career growth opportunities. The people I work with are good but I do find myself weighing how much good people are worth versus growth in my career, skills and self. Right now, and in this political environment, good people and a stable job are winning. I’ll look for other outlets to grow with a volunteer organization or personal project.
It's honestly sad how common this is. I have connected with colleagues who are kind, competent people that have been overlooked for raises, overworked, and mistreated in favor of people who play politics and internal nepotism. Being somewhere without that feeling must be a relief. I started a new job and am still struggling with seeing the same signs of previous workplaces, I think it's the anxiety that history will repeat itself.
I am a career and confidence coach. Coaches and therapists are two very different things. Coaches focus on your future and therapists tend to look at your past.
I would say the important thing about finding the right coach is look for a coach who has been trained by an ICF-accredited institution. These are legit coaches. Also, make sure they "get you" and aren't trying to sell you a bunch of stuff that's not going to get you to your goal. Ask for references and make sure they listen more than they talk. My clients typically have experienced success after four sessions with me. So l caution buying a huge package of sessions.
Hope this helps. Happy to answer any other questions you may have.
I’m sorry you are going through this.
