Definitely hard coming back but totally worth it to take the time off. I'd go through the "coming back to work" transition any time if it meant I could take more sabbaticals.
I’ve been seriously thinking about taking one next year and have had this same question! I talked to a colleague that took one before, and they said it was really hard for a couple weeks and then all went back to normal. They also said the more you plan before the better off you’ll be.
Taking it straight after promotion is risky. You have no protection against being laid off on sabbatical, and in fact it would be treated as a resignation.
Of course snagging the promotion would be nice.
I haven't ever taken one but I have honestly always wanted to. I think it would be really challenging coming back to work which is part of the reason I have never done it. I think I would get too used to not working and would not be able to force myself to go back.
I did this. Quite challenging
Could you elaborate? How long was your sabbatical?
