Has anyone used a surrogate and still took your full maternity leave? Did anyone make comments about it or expect you to work more through your leave?

Take your leave. People are going to judge you no matter what you do, so you should do what’s best for you and your family.

Wait a second, you can’t use your full mat leave if you use a surrogate?? But our spouses can still take the full paternity leave?

We actually get an extra 6 weeks as a “birthing parent” and then 12 weeks for parental

you should take your full leave. unless part of your leave is only provided as short-term-disability and you are thus not entitled to it, there is no reason not to. i took an extra month of leave and idc what anyone thinks about it (if they do at all)

Didn’t use a surrogate but take the full leave your firm offers, you have a new baby. Do not work at all on parental leave. Congratulations!

At my firm, the policy is different for birthing parents (up to 4 months disability plus 3 months bonding leave), and non-birthing parents (3 mos bonding leave). If I used a surrogate or adopted, I’d only be entitled to the 3 months bonding leave as a non-birthing parent.

My husband’s firm is 4 months parental leave regardless of status, so non-birthing parents can take the full leave (which is what he is doing, even though he is not giving birth, and his firm is very supportive of him taking the whole time).

Whatever you do, ignore the comments.

Comments are usually completely irrelevant to what’s best for your family, your career, your comp, etc.

It is often the case that the mother, as birthing parent, is initially on medical leave for birth recovery.

Depending on what state you are in, you may find that your peers might end up with a few weeks more than you solely due to that aspect.

That said, take every single second you are allowed with zero regard for what others think. Fugg them. Their thoughts are worthless in all of the next phases of your life. Just like what the back of our hair looks like, what others judge is none of our business. 😉

Congratulations!

Congrats! As others have said, check your firm’s policy to see if they make a distinction between the “birthing parent” or not. My firm does for associates but does not for partners. There may also be other policies in place for surrogacy — while not directly applicable, my firm has separate “bonding leave” for adoptive parents in addition to the parental leave, as an example. Regardless, I recommend using all the leave you are entitled to! Everyone in my group (moms and dads) have done so without scrutiny, but that of course depends on firm / group culture.

Heard consulting is going through really difficult times in Canada.....

I’ve been depressed for years now and this past week I lost a dog I’ve had for 15 years; he was one of the only bright spots in my life and I’ve just found it so hard to focus or motivate myself on anything after this. I genuinely feel like I’m at rock bottom, Idk if I’m crazy to feel that way bc of a dog but I used to be able to control this and put up a front but now my depression and anxiety are starting to leak into my work conversations completely unintentionally, I wish this would stop :(

How do I keep my team engaged when I am also struggling to stay motivated?

Our department has had a lot of turnover within the last few months, all of which were from different reasons (school, family issues, opportunities close to home, etc.). It has been a challenge to divide the workload, while still trying to remain flexible and provide a work-life balance.

However, I’m starting to feel stressed and disengaged. Any suggestions to make it through the changes?
