Has being “too nice” ever held you back in finance? Early in my career, I said yes to every task, stayed late without complaint, and bent over backward to be a “team player.” Meanwhile, my male colleagues had no problem pushing back, asking for better projects, or saying no—and they were rewarded for it. I’m realizing now that being too agreeable cost me promotions and raises. Have you ever felt like being "nice" has hurt your career in finance? How do you strike the right balance between being collaborative and standing your ground?

Being “too nice” doesn’t hold women back—being too accommodating does. Finance rewards those who own their value and play the game. Saying no, taking credit, and negotiating aggressively aren’t just options—they’re necessary skills. If you don’t advocate for yourself, no one else will.

I think of "nice" as being personable and there's nothing wrong with that. Where it gets dangerous is when you're too obsequious or too eager to please. It's best, I find, to present a friendly yet confident attitude. Don't be a pushover, but don't be overly negative or mean-spirited. It's always best to let the work stand on its own, but there are times you have to stand your ground and set some boundaries.

I think the other comments are right about being nice not necessarily being the problem. I think we should continue to stick by our values no matter what, however, that doesn’t mean we should be total pushovers. We have to learn to advocate for ourselves, this doesn’t make us any less nice.

In one interview today with Kundyl. Their expectation is to be available oncall 24*7... With work from office.

They literally got offended and stared at me for asking about WLB...

Seems companies are not learning, even after the great resignations.. the big names... Like TCS, ibm.. are not doing any changes to their work culture and ethics to improve WLB.
