I’ve managed to book first class tickets multiple times using points alone. It definitely requires some strategy and flexibility. Keeping an eye on promotions and transfer bonuses also really help stretch points further. The feeling of upgrading to first class without paying cash is unbeatable, especially on long-haul flights with extra comfort, better meals, and lounge access. It takes some effort and planning, but for anyone who loves travel and values getting the most out of rewards programs, it’s absolutely worth it!
It is better to have economy class
Been doing it for 20 years. The availability has gone down drastically. Still there if you have top tier status with your program of choice.
How are you guys doing it? Pay the ticket and upgrade both with points, or a combo of cash and points?
First class on long hauls? Not really worth the effort given the limited options and routing imo, unless you have extreme flexibility
Business class is very doable with some minor flexibility and frequent checking of availability.
I find transcontinental business class almost impossible to book with points. Domestic first class is not too hard. I am delta exclusive (diamond). I can’t speak for other airlines.
AF exclusively does not allow for individuals without Flying blue membership to book AF first with points unless you already have status with them.
Often, making a connection helps. On a flight to London from Atlanta, connecting in Detroit or Minneapolis required about half the points as the nonstop.
This is less true for non Delta airlines, as Delta is typically on one when they price their awards
Not first class, but I am able to book business class with points/miles. I do it for my parents who are retired so they have open flexibility and typically fly between US and Asia during non-busy season. I have never been able to book it for myself because I typically fly during July, Thanksgiving and Christmas.
They book the tickets at calendar open or set alerts. I don’t bother with first anymore, because they cost more points now, and I’m
perfectly happy with any lie-flat seat.
No, we tried to get business class for our honeymoon to Italy and we spent all my chase sapphire reserve points - like 315k for essentially air Canada’s comfort level 😭😭😭😭 but by 6’5 fiancé can’t sit for 9 hours in economy and not lose his mind.
Yes but it was 900K points for the family for Japan
Tbh I am fine with premium economy, I just want more room to sleep and one less person next to me
Not first, but business class. Try thepointsguy.com
Have redeemed points for SQ Suites, Lufthansa’s First & Air France La Premier in addition to dozens of business class flights.
LH is much easier to redeem. SQ was booked business with points and paid upgrade to first. La Premier was same as SQ and likely only possible because of week load factors during the Olympics

I aways buy my own ticket rather to wait for the company's provided
First no but layflat biz yeah almost every time
