Have you ever had that one colleague who turns every quick check in into a full-blown saga? I've got someone at work who l genuinely like, but l've started to dread even the simplest question. Because once she starts talking, it's nearly impossible to get out. I've been trying to find ways to keep things short and respectful without seeming rude. Anyone else run into this? How do you set those subtle boundaries without creating tension?

I am that coworker. I know I do it, but I don’t know how to stop it. I am so so sorry

I’m also curious about how the conversation typically concludes.

Set the expectation in the beginning of the check in that you only have X amount of minutes or a hard stop at a particular time. Then, it’s on you to pay attention to that time and enforce said boundary.

That’s a really good point! I think setting that expectation upfront could make a big difference. I’ve been guilty of not being clear about my time boundaries, then kicking myself later when things run way over.

Yes! She goes on and on and on about people I don’t know such as her kids’ teachers and other classmates’ parents…. Usually by this time I’m staring at my computer screen and typing and looking as busy as I possibly can while trying to be polite and occasionally nodding and saying mhmm and just wondering what I said to bring this on. I can ask her the simplest question and then 10 minutes later she’s still going.
Sometimes I just get up and say I’m going to the bathroom.

The thing is, a lot of the time I’m not pretending at all, I’m very obviously busy, and it makes no difference! This happens even when I have headphones in!

I’ve been there! It’s hard when you like the person. I started using calendar blocks and saying, “I’m heads-down until noon, but happy to catch up after.” Want to try that route? Totally get that, it’s a tough balance.

Yes, I think that’s a good approach! I’ve tried doing something similar, but sometimes I still get roped in 🙃 Maybe I need to be a bit more direct.

Yes this happens to me often. My boss is one of the worst about it. I will go to ask her one thing and she will talk my ear off for an hour. The whole time I am inching towards the door knowing how far I am going to get behind on my work.

Ugh, I feel that so much. It’s the worst when it’s your boss as you can’t exactly cut them off! I’ve had those moments too, where I’m half-listening, half-panicking about everything I’m not getting done.

Looking for some UGC gigs. I can do unboxing and demos. Rates start at $100 for a video, and $20 per photo. which is significantly lower than others in the market. Just trying to get more content creation under my belt. I specialize in social media as a director in a marketing agency, so I know what will perform. Give me a holler if you need UGC for your brands! :)

Does anyone have advice about dealing with a workplace bully? Someone's already left because of them, they're a member of upper management, and I'm not sure telling HR would be a good idea.
