I failed at two firms (V10 and V30) and found success at one of the federal agencies that wasn’t targeted by DOGE.
Just remember that Big Law isn’t the only place to be a lawyer and the system is designed to create churn.
ETA: I have partners reach out to me trying to recruit me after matters have closed, but big law just isn’t for me. I might consider a smaller regulatory shop in the future, but never big law again.
Almost two years at the V30 and 3.5 years at the V10. I was pushed out each time and got three months of full pay and website time and a one time severance payment on both occasions. I was well liked by powerful partners in both groups, but I didn’t have my shit together at that point. I think if I had started as a junior at the V10, I would have lasted longer, but by then they said I wasn’t at my class level. But the thing is I now have more experience and a wider skillset than a lot of the senior associates I was working with at the time.
I was pushed out of my last firm due to a tyrannical partner who was jealous of the romantic attention I was getting from an associate they fancied. It was very messy. They were the most psychotic person I’ve ever encountered.
Then I landed in the firm I’m in now with another partner who was equally difficult to deal with but for different reasons. I was almost pushed out by them, but by the grace of another partner who fought and believed in me, I was able to stay. I ended up succeeding.
To be frank, I got extremely lucky. Being very personable helps a ton.
Thank you. I think it’s tough for others to understand what these situations are like if they haven’t had to deal with bosses like this.

Many partners actually yes. More common than you think given the nature and structure of firms

NEPs who are not going to make equity (the majority). It’s literally the business model. They go on and find great positions at other firms
I'm at a V25. I saw a summer half-a** it once and I assumed it was because he was splitting his summer with a V10 (though there were also puzzling things about his work that couldn't have just been laziness, like grammatical and punctuation errors in his writing). He of course went to the V10, lasted a couple of years there, then I think lateralled to another highly ranked shop, lasted a couple of years, and fell out of there and into finance. I think his daddy was rich so he was pretty much set up, and as far as I know he's doing fine.

How do you assume he was let go of each of these firms? That is a wild assumption tbh
I know a guy who’s gone through it countless times. He just keeps finding new firms. He’s been running his con for almost 30 years now.
