Why do you want to go to NYC if your ultimate goal is DC? If your significant other doesn’t want to live there and has negative opinions of the city, is your desire to “make it in New York” strong enough to give up or damage that relationship?
Has your significant other spent any meaningful time in NYC? It’s possible you could entice them with some trips to change their perspective but it’s a fairly big lifestyle adjustment, even when you’re coming from another major metro. I had a great time when I lived there part time (2-3 weeks at a time every month or two) while I was younger but I wouldn’t want to live there full time.

Thank you, Voice of Reason!
I dunno how much you work with NY associates and partners but I’ve found Chicago and west coast people are 10x easier to work with than people who have been in NY for any extended period. It’s just a different mindset

A4, 100%. NYC attorneys work harder but not smarter.
Been in the city 10 years and counting, nearing the end of my chapter here but as others have said: ignore the naysayers. Good or bad, right or wrong, NYC (Manhattan) is the greatest city on earth, will offer you access to some of the highest levels of personal and professional enjoyment and achievement, and once you’re ready to leave you will forever carry around what the city instills within you. NYC isn’t a city, it’s a brand and a universal stamp of approval. Good luck!

I would say any Manhattan neighborhood from the UWS/UES south to FiDi could be said to be comparable to River North to varying degrees. All will have yuppies, amazing restaurants/museums/bars/shopping, a readily accessible Whole Foods and an easy commute within Manhattan if those are the elements of River North you want to replicate.
FWIW - ignore the haters - NYC is worth living in while you’re still mobile / without kids for a year or two. Manhattan is like Disney World for yuppies, it’s impossible not to enjoy it for a couple of years, especially if you have a s/o to enjoy it with and a solid income like you have.
If you’re obsessed with early retirement, saving massive amounts of cash every year you work in big law, need a backyard, have a bunch of kids, it’s probably not a great fit particularly in the long term. But for a year or two while childless and with a $300K-ish income? It’s a blast. Do it and don’t look back.

I wouldn’t go if your SO is that against it. What in particular does she not like?

If you like NYC, live there for 2 months as a trial period.
Lol yes I lived in Wicker Park for several years at the outset of my legal career. While I lived there, I watched a house on my block (right next to division and Milwaukee) get sold for 2 million dollars to one of the yuppiest families I’d ever seen. All everyone did in Wicker was complain about how gentrified it is and how it’s becoming Lincoln Park, lol.
BTW OP, have you been to places like Lincoln Park? There’s plenty of prep in Chicago but you seem to focus on the most egregious counterexamples - like you never need to actually go to Pilsen, even if you live in Chicago, if the dirty hipsters bother you that much.

There isn’t really a neighborhood like River North in NY. I guess maybe Murray Hill? Maybe Chelsea? But places in NY for the same/similar lifestyle as River North will be double to triple the price.

$6000 will get you a nice 1 bedroom. A 2 bedroom is probably out of the question unless you’re fine with pre-war buildings with no amenities.
You’ll miss the alleys and wafting scent of chocolate…

That is definitely true
Does your firm have a NY office? Can you go test it for 6 months or a year? Maybe worth a shot if you plan to end up in DC anyways.
