Chicago is actually quite safe. Like any city, it all depends on where you choose to life.
I love Boston, but when I moved here it literally took me a year to make real friends. Chicago would probably be easier. People there are friendlier and more outgoing, and the cost of living is so much better.
Got it. Thank you for the information🙏
Living in Boston but having visited Chicago many times I’d say that if cost of living is at all a concern move to Chicago. The renter’s housing market in and around Boston is outrageously expensive and is projected to keep increasing due to the highly educated population and higher paying jobs in things like biopharma. Chicago is a nice, quiet city that still has a city vibe. There are very safe parts of the city that are very reasonably priced (at least in comparison to Boston).
Thanks to everyone who expressed their opinion! Now I have much more clear picture of both cities🙌
I lived in Chicago for over 15 years and recently moved to Boston (my hometown). I loved living in Chicago - it is easier to meet people, has a better nightlife and food scene, and is absolutely beautiful. It’s basically a small NYC at half the price. With all the love for this city in my heart, it IS significantly less safe than Boston. Will you personally observe crime on an average day in Chicago? Absolutely not. However, there are carjackings - and last week alone, a woman was set on fire on the train and multiple people were shot after a busy holiday event right downtown.
These types of crimes are somewhat isolated, but very disturbing - and they are happening. The crime is random and impossible to fully avoid. It’s a wrong place, wrong time situation.
Crime aside, I think Chicago is the superior city for a young, single adult, BY FAR. It’s way cheaper and often more “fun”
Boston is beautiful, safer, and way more expensive. It will be more challenging to make friends. These are tradeoffs…
It would be good to hear from people who lived in Chicago or still live: what are the worst parts of Chicago that anyone should avoid?
2 completely different price points
You mean Boston is much more expensive?
OP, lots of good feedback here. Have you spent time in both cities? Sometimes gut feel really is what it comes down to. I realized I’d rather live in Back Bay (arguably the most expensive part of Boston) than any neighborhood in Chicago, just because I like it. Whereas I’d be open to living in a few different neighborhoods in New York City, for example (and then went ahead and did that).
I think it’s hard to pick cities for the city, at least for me; a lot of it comes down to the neighborhood. Spend a few weeks looking through Compass rentals for specific neighborhoods, go walk those neighborhoods after spending a few days Airbnb’ing, etc. Other people’s “this is great” or “this feels safe” may not be for you.
Thank you for your opinion! I will hope for the best and do what I can. And time will show🙌
