Either Sorrento or Amalfi.
If you want to bop around other parts of the coast, Amalfi. It’s more scenic, but also noticeably more expensive.
Sorrento is still a good base imo, good food (you could perhaps argue that anywhere though) and you can just take a day or so to go visit other parts of the coast.
I did that trip a few years back with my sister in September and we stayed in Positano in an apartment that we rented for 5 nights walking distance to the town and shops/restaurants and it was fantastic, just long enough. While we were there, we just walked to town and took the ferry to Capri, it's a short ferry ride. We didn't stay in Capri, the day trip there was perfect for us. September is a beautiful time to go there, no humidity.
We went to Amalfi but felt like it was for those who like luxury travel. We were shopping a lot in Amalfi, and everyone looked at us weird because we were holding a ton of plastic bags from the various shops we went into. We liked Tropea far more, and so much more that we visited it again for another night on our way back to Rome (we did a road trip from Rome to Syracuse and back for 10 days or so). Tropea is a lot cooler and less crowded — it’s a really quaint beach town, and although it seemed well-known among Germans, it was pretty tourist-free. According to our tour guide, Tropea is where Italians vacation.
