Latino here. Most people in our community think it’s dumb because it doesn’t make sense in Spanish nor Portuguese. It’s not just straight people.
Linguistically you would have to use a gender neutral article as well. The Argentines coming up with “les latines” have a much more solid movement.

I, for one, like the intent of the movement to shift from Latino/a to Latinx, but it is a very North American "Latinx" charged movement. Latino culture, including the Spanish language, is very "machismo" based and the gendering of certain things and ideas can, at times, be viewed as problematic. With these macho undertones, people of the LGBTQIA+ community are not given the space to freely convey their identities. I am pretty sure that for this reason, the Latinx initiative was created.
For that reason, I believe that it's honestly okay and is just an inclusive way to describe groups both genders under the common phrase, Latinx.
Que chucha... en español ya es común utilizar la “x” para referirse a ambos sexos, no es algo oficial pero en conversaciones informales y redes es muy utilizado. En inglés no debería usarse la palabra “latino” sería lo contrario a un anglicismo.

Pero “latino” es una palabra en inglés 😂 Si todo el mundo hubiera estado usando “latin people” en vez de “latinos”, no habrían inventado “latinx”.
“Todxs”, “nosotroxs”, etc. no suenan naturales de manera oral. No estoy en contra de hacer la lenguaje menos sexista, solo estoy diciendo que va a pegar mejor mediante el uso de palabras que tienen sentido lingüísticamente 😊

Em português usamos os gêneros corretos das palavras, quaisquer que sejam. Entretanto, latino/latina como grupo étnico é uma invenção americana, e como tal é completamente ignorada no Brasil e em Portugal.
