Hi All, Bowl Leader here: just a public service announcement that in order to make sure this Bowl remains a great place for lawyers and legal professionals to talk about work and the law in a civil and professional manner, any needlessly controversial posts involving divisive politics will be reported/removed and the poster will be subject to suspension from the Bowl. Keep it civil.

Is there a good test for when a post about the law approaches the political Forbidden Zone? Law and politics do intersect on occasion.

My goal is to continue to make sure this Bowl is a great place for lawyers and legal professionals to connect. Civil discourse is important, especially for our profession. But some people are trolls and just like to be inflammatory, and that’s what I’m trying to mitigate.

I don’t mean to be rude, but you are unilaterally censoring people on this app if they are posting political stuff you don’t like? I totally understand people who are making threats, but it seems a little hypocritical for our profession.

funny

It is sad but some people are trolls that like to abuse this platform just to cause controversy. I don’t intend to limit or impede real political discourse, whether it’s conservative or liberal. It’s more the trolls that are trying to sow controversy that I’m being mindful of. Not everyone has good intentions and it’s my role to be an extra safeguard for that.

Hi new here. Idk what my value is and if I’m getting paid an amount that reflects my hard work. I am a paralegal for a small law firm (family and immigration) w only 1 attorney. I have about 20 files or more in my rotation at a time. I work on various types of cases at once. Some are simple, others are extensive. I feel like it’s very unstructured and one of the managers micromanages. It’s like every man for himself. Take home pay is $50k. I am working on my bachelors deg. Do I get paid enough?

Have a call on Friday with the CEO of an environmental entrepreneurship non-profit. It could lead to a professional opportunity and maybe even billable work I can refer to my firm down the line. I’m going in with an open mind but little concrete information on his entity and goals and ways I could get involved. What questions would you ask such a person?

Negotiating a settlement. I’m at $10k, opposing counsel is at $20k. My client won’t go higher than $15k. OC has come down to 17.5k and says his client won’t budge from that. Do I offer 12.5k so we can hopefully meet in the middle at 15k? Is that how the settlement game is played? Seems dumb we can’t just say let’s meet in the middle now and be done with this. (I’m a first year, first time negotiating a settlement on my own and I don’t want to screw this up!)

Transactional associate. Lateraled 6 months ago and one of the biggest pain points has been my new firm’s inclination to “hop on a call”, which of course requires every single stakeholder to join. The end result being every call has 25 people on it and nothing actually gets done because no one wants to ask a question that could come off as silly. It’s destroying my ability to get anything done during the day. It’s a complete performance and it drives me nuts.

I’ve practiced litigation in DC for about 5+ years at a larger plaintiffs’ firm, and am considering a switch to a defense firm. Is there any insight to how many billable hours this would require, and how much time that would actually be? For reference, the firm has a 1900 billable hour requirement and the partner said I would have “no problem” fulfilling that based on the work they have.
