Hi everyone. I’m a dual-licensed attorney in South America and New York. After completing my LL.M., I passed the bar and joined a firm working on mass tort litigation. My background is more transactional, and I’d like to move back into that area, but it’s been challenging. I’d love to hear from others with a similar background—how have you navigated the U.S. market? Did you stay in legal practice or transition into a related field?

I actually went back to school and did JD. Not that I would recommend, but it did help me find a job a way easier than the LLM. Three of my LLM classmates did the same thing.

I have a similar background, and I am currently working on mass tort as well but moving to employment transactions in a couple of weeks. DM me if you want to talk.

You might want to join the biglaw bowl as well and ask it there. Might be worth trying your luck with the massive NY firms as well with the M&A market heating up.

Read the 2 hour job search and network with people who also have your background. Somewhat easier if you’ve done 4+ years of practice at a top firm in your home jurisdiction and you need to have independent work authorization at this point - firms aren’t really sponsoring visas.

Curious if anyone else is or has been in the same boat. I started as an assistant at an entertainment law firm prior to passing the bar. Upon passing, the partner told me they would hire an assistant for me since I now became an associate. That was 1.5 years ago and I am still in the limbo of juggling my own workload + doing assistant roles for my supervisors. I have also had no increase in pay, which is a huge deal for me. Is this normal in the entertainment world? Any suggestions?

Does anyone have any tips on certain job positions or companies where an LLM would prove to be useful with my background?
I'm starting to feel quite stuck in this situation and it's very demoralising.
