I’ve lived in the city proper for 11 years and never had a car. If I need one I use Getaround and I just rent one for a couple hours.
Some of the public transportation is world class here. As long as you plan accordingly. If your job makes you go into the office 2 to 3 times a week it’s not that bad rush-hour is pretty manageable
Lived here for 17 years, it’s really just personal preference tbh. I didn’t have a car for the first 10 years and it was fine. Now I have one and I could never go back. If you live closer to downtown, and near public transit it’s definitely not a necessity.
Maybe wait until you find a place, if it comes with free/dedicated parking then there’s no harm in keeping it. If you’d have to street park, it will be a hassle.
Cars are a pain. (and I have one) Finding parking or paying for parking is a pain. Chicago loves to give out parking tickets. Save your money and hold off if you can.
I have a car because I want to be able to get up and go when I need to. However, I have several friends that do not have cars and they just walk everywhere or use public transportation. You can really do either.
You’ll be missing out on that underground street racing scene. Does your car have Nos? If not, then don’t worry about it. You need a 10 second car to compete on these streets!
Ditch that thing and never look back
My car is a 2005 with 62,000 miles and I bought brand new. I moved here in 2009 and mostly drive on weekends. I train, bus, Lyft, Uber and taxi everywhere in that order.
Welcome.
Depends where you live. If you are reasonably close to an el and you are on the fence, I’d say no.
the amount I’ve spent on packing tickets, city stickers, and repairs over the past 20 years for that luxury is insane. I need my suv now cuz #dadlife, but didn’t before.
I spent 8 years without a car - no issues at all. Public transit can get you almost anywhere. A scooter is a great vehicle alternative (for the warmer months).
Chicago is one of the best biking cities in the world and with ebikes it's so much fun!
Keep the car. 100%. I'm an ex-NYer and a car is necessary for exploring, schlepping and GTFO of the city. Curious, why are you moving to Chicago?
Don’t listen to this guy. He doesn’t live his life a quarter mile at a time. He doesn’t get how fast and furious life can be.
Don’t walk drunk near the river.
Been in the city 5 years without a car. Just find a place to live that’s in walking distance to a grocery store and you’re golden. You learn really quickly that .7 miles is not too far to walk with groceries or on the handlebars of a Divvy.
We Divvy or Uber if public transport isn’t convenient for our end location, and zipcar on the rare occasion we need to go pick up something heavy or going somewhere in the suburbs
Depends on where you end up living. BUT you can certainly get around without one
