Everyone's response will be different, as some people give tons of notice and others wait longer for various reasons. In my case, I had two January babies and told my team in mid-to-late summer. I think I was around 15-20 weeks for each. I wanted to be past 12 weeks and tell my family & friends first. But I was starting to show, and we were finalizing our upcoming tax season schedule. I didn't have issues with morning sickness and primarily worked from home, so I probably could have waited a little longer, if not trying to be considerate of scheduling.
I was advised by my career advisor to notify HR as soon as possible. I told my engagement partner when I was ~4.5 months
I’ve had two pregnancies now in PA.
With my first - I was in my first tri during busy season, so I waited until busy season was over/I couldn’t hide my pregnancy any longer. This timing was best for me because I was able to get through our busy season/ranking/annual assessments without my pregnancy impacting how anyone viewed me. Plus, I was able to let my teams know before planning staffing of the next busy season (since I was out for 3/4 of the next busy season), so my teams had plenty of time to prepare for me being out/me transitioning my jobs for a busy season.
With my second - I was due at the end of a busy season. So I told my bosses in early December once I was past my first tri & - also - could no longer hide my bump. I only missed the last 2.5 weeks of busy season, but It did impact issuance for 3 of the jobs I was on. Having 6 Months to prepare made my partners feel better & allowed me to transition seamlessly.
Overall, it’s def your call and your relationships to assess. All of my partners and teams were SUPER supportive and happy for me both times. They all also encouraged me to take all the time the firm offered & wished me well at leave. I even got promoted to SM while on leave with my first baby. I think it’s all about the relationships you’ve built and your ability to transition successfully that will impact how your teams take it and how it impacts performance.
Thank you for sharing your experiences! I’m new to the firm (just started) and will likely ask around to those who went through the same process. Hopefully, the team that I’d be joining is supportive.
