Hi ladies, I’m currently 8 months pregnant and, long story short, will be resigning during my maternity leave. I’m struggling with the decision to not tell anyone about my intention but at the same time I don’t want to lose out on the money or the health insurance. Any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks!

It’s a business decision. Firm wouldn’t hesitate to fire you if they needed to. Do what you gotta do to protect you

Are you resigning to go somewhere else? If not, I’d wait to resign until after your mat leave ends and strategically have your last day be the first of a month to get an additional month of health insurance. This is not an uncommon situation so don’t sweat it too much. Although if you want to come back to work at some point it will be 100x easier if you drop down to part time for a few years rather than dropping totally out.

Confirm your firm doesn't have a clawback. Some firms you can't leave within 6 months of returning.

Say nothing. First, I would never leave a job until you’re certain and it’s time to give notice, there’s always the slim chance something could change. Second, I would be wary of unintended consequences—you’re trying to be nice, but there’s a chance your employer could respond in some way that impacts your remaining time there.

I’d wait - you never know what could happen when the baby is born and your circumstances might change. Don’t tell anyone until it’s right for you.

Thanks for the responses! To answer some questions, I’m resigning, taking some time off and relocating. My firm does have a clawback but that kicks in after the 10 week period that the state grants. Planning to resign during the 10 week period.

This! Do not assume they will respect a notice period. Do not give notice until after the clawback period has ended. And don’t gove notice until after all paid leave has ended (why leave money on the table that you are entitled to?)

Can you request working remotely when you come back from leave so you either don’t have to resign or can resign at a later time?

Can you not resign after your maternity leave ends reasoning that you are relocating? Assuming it’s somewhere where the firm isn’t located?

They sound awful. All of that over 8 weeks???? Don’t feel guilty at all. They are doing very very little and they’ll claw it back anyway.

Also a pregnant associate wanting to resign after mat leave - where did you find out about the clawback period? I double checked our handbook and didn’t see anything about that. And our HR person hasn’t mentioned it either.

I spoke with other colleagues that previously went on maternity or paternity leave. It also came up as one of the forms I needed to fill in when I spoke with someone from the leaves department.

How do you deal with making mistakes at work? I’ve been doing good work lately but there’s one partner who thinks I’m mistake prone and I just made a mistake on something he asked me to do, but I corrected it quickly. However, there is public record of my mistake.

I feel like I'm at my wits end. I teach self-contained classes and according to the ISBE website my classes shouldn't be more than 8 students unless I have an aide - then it can be 10. I have no aide and most of my classes are around 14 kids. Some with behavior plans that are only out of our behavior room setting for my class... Is anybody else out there going through illegal class sizes for self-contained? How are you dealing? Maybe a vent session is in order.
