I feel like I'm at my wits end. I teach self-contained classes and according to the ISBE website my classes shouldn't be more than 8 students unless I have an aide - then it can be 10. I have no aide and most of my classes are around 14 kids. Some with behavior plans that are only out of our behavior room setting for my class... Is anybody else out there going through illegal class sizes for self-contained? How are you dealing? Maybe a vent session is in order.

My mod/severe classes run anywhere from 20-28. I’m pretty sure it should not be more than 10. No one cares unless it inconveniences them.

How do you have 28 kids in a severe class? Between toileting, feeding and intense behavior, something would get skipped and someone, likely staff, would get injured.

UNION issue!

In the past this has happened to me. My school defended it because attendance in our district is poor so as long as there were not more than the allowed number literally in the class they were in compliance. I asked what about the days I am over and they told me to let them know and they would remove a student for that class period. 🤦🏻‍♀️I was not going to do that. I teach departmentalized classes. How do I decide who doesn’t get to learn that day?

All too common...

Our self-contained classes can have 15 without an aide. Resource classes can have up to 8 per group without an aide. That's in our state.....

Please call your union. Our union would want to know and, periodically seeks us out to discuss our concerns (past 2yrs).

Good luck!

Sheesh, sorry to hear this! You should explain it to your manager!

Question about inclusion…. I’ve been teaching inclusion for 5 years so I’m still a newb, but a first year coworker of mine said she got points off on her observation because her kids were scattered in the classroom and she was having to move from kid to kid to assist. While I see the point of putting them together for convenience, I don’t agree with this at all! To me this is like singling them out by putting them all together instead of INCLUDED amongst peers. What do y’all think?
