Flow state isn’t for middle managers…
Amen. But I still think it's worth trying to create it. I’ve found blocking out time for deep work really helps. I’ll let my team know in advance when I’m heads-down, turn off notifications, and put on noise-canceling headphones. It’s tough, but I feel like I deeply need that flow state to get anything done!
I don't even think in terms of flow state. It's a job, not a jam band. A lot of it just comes down to time management. And it sounds like that's what you need to work on. Do whatever it takes to get organized, and you'll be able to focus when you need to.
Somedays, most days, that is how it is. Embrace the chaos and get the work done as you can. Not being able to put blinders on and just do stuff was one of the hardest things to get used to, but definitely isn’t that bad once you realize that is the job and it’s doable. You are probably doing better than you give yourself credit for.
As long as you're doing your best, you need to not be bogged down by how perfect the hours you're putting in are. Part of our job is to be the creative eye for all that is going on in the agency and it can be pretty challenging to always find flow.
