Yeah, there's no way that there'd be persistent, pervasive racism historically evidenced centuries prior to the invention of mass media without that TV report.
Hot take: I’m a person of color of too. I don’t identify as black and no I don’t think media’s reporting is ridiculous. Our country has always been divided and racist. Nothing has changed except the fact that due to technology it is now being recorded. There is a group of people in this country that will never see minorities, especially black people as real people.
I’m British and living in the US. I find it so concerning that there isn’t any easily available truly impartial news. The BBC is less impartial than it used to be in the UK but it doesn’t openly swing to either side of the spectrum.
Note: What happened to that man was horrible regardless of your political views in my opinion

If you have a question about the impartiality of a topic either look it up yourself and generate your own take or go to multiple sources 🤷🏻♂️

Nah I think it’s the constant killing of unarmed black men/women coupled with a general indifference from the average white person that causes the divide. Doesn’t even stop with white people, I mean just read PWC 3’s comment above. It’s just news to him/her.
Rising Star
OP I completely agree. White people shouldn’t come in and try to take over a movement such as BLM but if you want them to help the cause they need to be included. Hell thats human nature in any cause is you need to feel included and not just a face. I still remember a story about some BLM activists meeting with Hilary back when she was running for president. She tried to offer them advice but they essentially told her they didn’t want her advice and they were there to tell her about the problem and what needed to be done. Now idk exactly what was said as I wasn’t In the room but My thought was when reading this was even if you’re not a fan of Hilary, she has accomplished a lot, been around the block and had front row seat on social issues and has/had considerable power and connections. How do you go in there and essentially ignore her attempts to provide feedback and help.

Honestly the news is pretty much good for nothing these days

Trigger happy cops too.

Mainstream media’s constant pushing of hysteria definitely does not help(not just the recent police brutalities), but i think coverage of these incidents is justified.
@A1 there are studies (including this extensive Harvard study I've posted below) that have shown that in terms of the use of violent force, controlling for some variables, whites are actually more likely to be shot by cops than black people. Just as @TM1 said white people are often violently killed by police too.

I hope the TV media inspires people to talk to another more. We are more similar than different. Racism can be cured with understanding...

Agreed OP - the core problem of racism exists, but media outlets thrive on exploiting divisive views and driving a wedge. This country is literally consuming itself. After centuries of inequality, why aren’t we trying to work together? Where is our empathy? When are we going to understand that fueling the flame of anger and hatred - against any race, religion, or gender- is making us weaker? Why is our own media trying to exploit that anger?
I don’t think we’ll ever learn.
Enthusiast
We need to come together and learn how to get there. Racism isn’t going to go away if we - and the media- keep pitting the races against each other. Don’t you see that?

Facts:
- American police kill unarmed citizens at a much higher rate than other countries
- Unarmed blacks are killed at a significantly higher rate than unarmed whites, per capita. Unarmed Hispanics are also killed at a higher rate than whites. Native Americans have it worse than all.
Thoughts:
There’s a problem w police killing people in the U.S. There’s also a problem w them killing minorities (particularly) at a much higher rate. The national media almost exclusively runs with the black killings. Well-intentioned people tune in because they’re outraged by the injustice, and racists tune in once the riots/looting starts so they can say “I told you so”, and the media gets to feast on both ends.
The media is certainly not the main problem but it does feel like a slimy tactic.

Ted Turner started this with CNN / HLN and the 24 hour news cycle. Reporting has gone from "if it bleeds it leads" to "if it bleeds it's our only story for the next week until the next story that bleeds more."
It has less to do with political bias, and more gaining viewership based off that bias and getting eyeballs for ad revenue. It's all about money in the end.
These events still happen, and they are still a tragedy. Media is only an amplifier for a signal that's already there.
I agree. News and social media are basically the same. Whatever is needed to get audience. Most news organizations will now report “unconfirmed “ or “unverified” so they can be first. Just whips up people’s emotions often without facts or context.
Rising Star
The media’s reporting is often ridiculous. The goal these days is to keep people tuned to their channel 24/7 (as opposed to the old days when you got the news at 5:30/6:00 and/or noon.) so you’re getting stories over-dramatizes over days (“we’re coming to you live from little Haley’s grandparent’s house to find out how the family is dealing on day 3 of her missing bicycle...”).
But, a black jogger was killed, a black man died during a police stop. These are symptoms of a bigger problem. Media doesn’t cause these things.

I am a POC and yes the media is out to cause racial division. We need to get to the point where we condem the action and the person and leave race out of it. The more the media portrays these actions as racially motivated, the more we are divided.

I'm a South Asian American. I too read and watch the news.

Media’s goal is to stir up the pot so they can make money, it’s pretty obvious.

I’m not black but the recent murders bother me tremendously as well. I think it’s feeling human, not black, white or purple.

I’m disturbed by what happened to Mr. Floyd and also at the division it has caused. I think standing up against police brutality should be something that can unite everyone. It seems to occur in all racial demographics. Tbh, I’m white and I get nervous during police encounters too! They’ve been given so much power and there are too many ways to break laws.
Rising Star
The media is in the busy of making profits. They have an agenda.
It’s you. Because these vile actions are not being reported on, you think it’s the media’s fault and not those of the people performing the action??
I think people know it's real... Police shootings have been massly televised since at least 2014/2015. Another issue are the specific solutions to the problem? What laws need to be changed? What policies need to be reformed? A lot of people on one side of the argument talk about the issues, blame the other side for the issues but also don't have a well write-up plan to give to politicians so that politicians can help them to solve the issues.
The civil rights movement of the 60s had a plan, the gay rights movement had a plan etc. What do some of these left-wing groups propose to solve their issues?
Wait until you find out that the things that the media actually reports are just barely the tip of the iceberg. If the media was to keep reporting all the racist things that have happened to black people (and all people of color tbh), there would be and should be a lot more unrest. The “divide” you’re mentioning is something that has been present and festering since the first boats docked on the Gold Coast. There wouldn’t be a divide if everyone actually cared about justice, cared about righting this country’s wrongs, and cared about the rampant racial and socioeconomic inequality in this country. Boom, unity.
