I am always a “let’s do better next time” and I move on
M1 rereading your comment, totally agreed.
STD1 what I learned through my therapy was that it’s great to be driven and self critical, but it’s important to understand the difference between a growth mindset vs a deficit mindset. Driven because of perfectionism or believing you’re not good enough isn’t healthy.
Everyone makes mistakes in the job and in life. You can't turn back time so no point in wasting even more time on focusing on mistakes. Yes, learn from them, apologise if you need to, and get them fixed but ultimately move on.
There is a fine balance of learning on the job versus the imposter syndrome so many of us feel, especially in consulting.
I am of the belief of there is absolutely a bar you need to meet for any job. It’s the expectations for a role or a level or a company. One way I help this negative self talk is to define my own expectations of success for anything I do and make sure I do the things I need to do to achieve those. It helps me better deal with emotions afterwards as I reflect on how I did.
In what ways do you feel you’re not good enough? What does that self talk sound like?
