It’s not looking great for white collar jobs right now. I’d put out feelers but plan on hunkering down and waiting till the market improves.
It's currently impossible.
I’m 8 months unemployed with blue-chip work and school experience
It’s a lousy market compared to 2020-2021, at least in tech, but nowhere near as bad as the last major recession (2008-2012). Don’t let the market conditions stop you from looking. It may take longer to find a new role, which is a reason to start searching now rather than waiting and hoping the market improves.
I switched jobs in February and was surprised that it wasn’t more difficult, especially considering I had only been at my previous company for six months and needed to be 100% remote. (I’m priced out of my local market and moving would be expensive in both short and longterm costs.) In total I spent 6 weeks interviewing before I got the offer for my current role, which was one of two offers that week. I also went up in both title and compensation.
A few things helped me land objectively the best job of my career in a relatively short period of time:
- Being very clear on my value prop. My resume and LinkedIn are a highlight reel of accomplishments, not a listing of my job descriptions.
- Reaching out to current and former colleagues and asking where they would be looking if they were in my position. (A colleague at old company suggested new company.)
- Asking connections if they knew people working at companies that were currently hiring in my niche.
- Discussing potential roles with people who could refer me rather than just asking for the referral. Their insights were just as valuable as the referrals themselves.
- Applying at unsexy companies that get fewer applications. Lots of people want to work at MAANG companies; far fewer want to work at big legacy tech companies (current employer) or less mature startups (most of my previous employers).
The current job market is like 2008-09/10, Bidenomics = 🗑️
it’s rough out there 😭
For context, I’m on my 5th boss in just over a year bc people keep quitting and can’t work for the sr execs here
Where’s this at?
Set your LinkedIn premium account to actively looking without putting the open to work logo on your profile. Just leave it like that all the time. Interesting opportunities will come to you if you did a good enough job making your profile awesome.
I’m not having as much movement as I was hoping. I find that over qualified people are posting for jobs within my qualifications. It’s a lose-lose situation.

Much harder then it was a yr ago and it was rough then. The longer the are we going to have a recession or not question goes on the harder organization are holding the purse tight and employees are hunkering in to try and wait it out.
