How did you determine that you wanted to be partner? I am at a mid-size law firm. I enjoy what I do. I have a supporting husband and two small kids. In a few years, the firm will be asking me if I want to be considered for partnership but I’m honestly lost as to what I want to do. I know it’s not a one size fits all decision but I want to hear why the partners in here became partners. And if you are counsel, why you chose the counsel route instead of partnership?

I wanted the significant extra money, prestige, respect, and security that comes with being a partner.

I realized I wanted to control (as much as I could!) my own destiny. In particular, one of the partners who has advocated for me is going to retire in the next few years, and I worried that if I wasn't a partner, the other partners could hire someone who could eventually cut me out. Now it's up to me to maintain my client base and be productive, and I'm in the room when staffing decisions are made.

Boutique here. For me it was a no-brainer. I was hired by the founding partner as his last associate and apparent heir for his book, and have been here for my entire career as a lawyer. It’s a great firm with fantastic attorneys and partners who genuinely support each other and act like partners. I was offered equity, which lets me be part of the decision-making process and help direct the future of the firm. And I love what I do.

I want to work part time and I want the ability to set boundaries baked into my arrangement with my firm, so counsel has been a fit for me. I feel like the pressure to do more is omnipresent for partners. For counsel, you can set the terms.

Not what you asked, but in my case I didn’t “decide.” It just happened lol. I never wanted to be partner and didn’t want to plan for it. I’ve just been floating through life trying to figure out what I want to do with my life. It feels kinda weird tbh. No kids, no husband. I feel the expectations of me are higher, and I don’t necessarily feel my position is safe as a non equity partner is kinda like being both an associate and middle management with extra steps. I still feel I’m being dictated to by more powerful partners. The difference is they at least pretend to have some deference. I do find it a bit isolating as the associates who are close to my age seem to stop speaking when I walk up and seem to be a bit afraid of me.

Do what’s best for you and not according to others’ definition of prestige.

I had a call with a recruiter at BCG towards the end of last week. I went to check the job description for the role on the careers website and it’s not there anymore. Instead it says, “we’re sorry…the job you are trying to apply for has been filled.” Why would the recruiter reach out to me about applying for this role if they were going to fill it so soon? The role is still listed on LinkedIn but when I click apply it takes me to the BCG careers page with the note saying the role has been filled

What are your thoughts on revisiting places you've already been vs going somewhere new? My 'to-visit' list is so long, but I've really been itching to get back to a few old favorites like Ireland and Germany. How do you decide?
