How do layoffs work? The entire graphic design team got laid off last week, and I'm walking on eggshells since, because in my head, our team is up next. Do companies lay off everyone they need to cut out at once, or do they take it up one by one? Not that knowing would help me feel all that much safer, but it'd be nice to feel mentally prepared.

Sometimes layoffs happen all at once, sometimes they happen in stages. I'm not saying you should worry, but definitely prepare. Update your résumé, start saving money, etc. That way if nothing happens, great! But if a layoff does happen, you're not blindsided.

Be prepared, not scared. There is no telling how layoffs will work at any place. Sometimes it is just one department that is impacted, sometimes it's company-wide.

I feel like it's the new normal to always be ready to pack up and go on an unemployed adventure. It's a new must-have skill because no job is a promise, and no job is permanent. Every single infustry is making new jobs and replacing old ones with modified or completely new versions with an AI push.
