I think this is very situation dependent. Who are you apologizing to? Boss, client, court, other? What kind of mistake are we talking? Small, medium, big time? Did someone tell you to apologize or do you think you should? Is there a reason you don’t want to pick up the phone? Just a lot of ways to go about it, or not do it, depending on the context.
I agree. This seems like a time for a verbal acknowledgement (at a time that fits naturally in the conversation).
