How do you define fair pay when you’re in a niche role? I love what I do, but there are maybe a half dozen people in the company with a similar title, and even fewer externally. There’s no data to benchmark against. I’ve asked around and gotten wildly different answers. Is it better to compare against the broader market? Or just trust your gut and ask for what feels right?

I’d say try to compare it against your job title at other firms… but as a general rule, most people believe that they are overworked and underpaid, even if they are at the top end of their pay band…

Niche roles are a blessing and a curse. You have some freedom to set your own rate depending on how the market is. The hard part is finding the open position. Don’t price yourself out of a job, but do your best to see what is reasonable.

I think since your role is niche, it’s better to set what feels right. You can compare it with the job market and decide what is a good rate

Is it misleading to just look at Total Compensation from a $ dollar value/ Total Compensation seems to be much more subjective than base salary in terms of its value. Some factors might be:

RSUs granted on dollar value or by # of shares & stock price trends
Vesting schedule
strike price on ISOs & delta between strike price and real market value

For instance, most of value in Amazon's comp seems to be granted in years 3 & 4, but it's well known that most people last only 2 years max there.

I am a registered sales assistant which means I have my series 7. I also have the 63 and my Life & Health license. I was a financial advisor but the role is commission only so I decided to take a role as an assistant for some time to learn etc. I really like my role, but I only make 32k a year and after taxes I only take home about 25k. I have a gut feeling that I’m not being paid market value but it’s tough to find comparable salaries. Do you think $15.38/hr is a fair wage in this case?

Curious what’s a fair salary in MA? Was just told that there is likely not going to be a chance for a raise during my upcoming performance review due to my salary already being “above average for the industry” based on my employer’s questionable research. I’ve been with the company 8.5 years & am the only one in my role, which they can’t operate without. I execute tasks from two investment advisors and two financial planners - they make the decisions of what should happen & I make it happen.
