How do you handle working under a manager who clearly plays favorites? I’ve worked with one who gave the “cool guys” on the team all the best clients and visibility while I was left cleaning up behind the scenes. It’s hard to stay motivated when the playing field isn’t even. Have you ever successfully navigated that kind of dynamic?

Ugh, I seriously hate that kind of situation. Nothing kills team morale faster than a manager who plays favorites and acts like it’s normal. It’s frustrating because no matter how hard you work, it feels like you’re invisible. What worked for me was to find people on the team who saw what was really going on and had my back. I didn’t try to win over the favorites or the manager. In that way, I had someone on my side as well, so find people that resonates to you and focus on them rather than those that don't.

Attempt to put yourself out there, try to get ahead by talking about clients or projects you’d like to work on. Sometimes though it is in vain. Some bosses are just like that, they pick the favorites and those are the only people on the team to them.

I can definitely relate. In situations like that, I’ve tried to focus on doing great work and building a strong reputation beyond just my immediate manager. It’s frustrating, but sometimes staying consistent and visible to others can open up new doors, even if the environment isn’t ideal.

If I got married on a Sunday, could I use the flowers from the wedding the night before? (Anything they were going to leave behind like hanging installations) Seems like a waste for that decor to be trashed and an opportunity to pay it forward. Has anyone done this?
