My company keeps the thermostat at 68, which I appreciate so much. It is brutal outside and an igloo inside. I do the same thing at home during the summer. Our bills go up a ton for those 3-4 months, but it's worth it to not feel sticky and gross 24/7.
Pro
Management sometimes buy everyone an ice cream. That's always nice and adds moral.
My manager lets us adjust our hours when it’s too hot—we can start earlier or later. They also brought in fans and let us dress down, which definitely helps. It’s small stuff, but it makes a big difference when you're sweating just sitting still.
Conversation Starter
They sound an understanding management team, I like that. Some management I know have a fully airconned office and dress how they fancy but no other employee gets that and I find that a bit unfair so it’s good to hear that’s been set across everyone.
My office tends to run cold all year long. I dress appropriately.
When I worked in manufacturing, we offered free Gatorade, and additional time for breaks.
The hardest part was getting people to leave the fans alone at one place I worked. Maintenance set them up, so they were all flowing the same way to circulate the air. People would use broom handles to switch the fan to hit them while working thus interfering with the flow.
We also had popsicle breaks during days of extreme heat.
