How long does it take y’all to review a file? I know it depends on the size of the file and complexity of the matter. So, I’m asking if you can give me some general examples (“I reviewed X depositions in X time). I’ve been assigned a new case and not sure if I’m taking too long to review or doing it too fast. I’m a former government attorney and did not have bill my time so I went at my own pace but now in the private sector I feel I need to be doing everything as fast as I can.

I don’t think you should be worried about this. Comparing yourself to others is a trap. People also lie about how long things take. Bill the time it takes, but make sure you’re being efficient. Have good time entries. Let the partner talk to you if they have a concern.

Ask your supervisor how much time they’d like you to take. If they don’t give you a clear answer, you can suggest a reasonable time and then offer to check in mid-way with any revisions to that estimate.

My approach is to go slowly at first to learn the case and key issues, and then you can move very quickly once you’re up to speed. So the first few depos may take much more time to review than later ones.

I will echo the other comments, but a start (I think) is go by page numbers and complexity. Fact witness depo I do maybe .1 every 10 or so pages and then if it’s an expert depo you can bump it up maybe slightly like .1 every 7-8 pages. Good luck on your billing journey, I’ve been doing it five years and am looking to get out of it lol. Learning to word and log time entries in a way where it will get paid is more important that what you actually do…

It should take as long as it takes in terms of billing! Never cut your own hours. You will get more efficient over time. If you are dealing with an insured matter then you need to be aware of the billing guidelines of the insurer which might put a cap on time per task such as reviewing depo transcripts. Check with the relationship partner to see if there are any billing issues or nuances you should be aware of with the client.

Additionally, leverage your firm’s approved AI! CoCounsel is really great at quickly summarizing depositions (cuts out the objections, sticks to substance).
